Built-Up Felt Membrane

A built-up felt membrane is a roofing system composed of alternating layers of bitumen and reinforcing fabrics that form a durable, waterproof membrane. This traditional flat-roof solution is designed to provide maximum protection against water penetration and weather-related damage.

A built-up felt membrane roof typically includes:

  • Base sheet: The initial layer fixed to the roof deck, designed to allow trapped moisture to escape.
  • Intermediate layers: Multiple layers of bitumen-coated felt, installed and bonded using hot bitumen or cold adhesive.
  • Top layer: A cap sheet or gravel surfacing that shields the system from UV exposure and weathering.

Built-up felt roofing is cost-effective, quick to install, and well-known for its long-term reliability. The multiple-layered construction creates a strong, weather-resistant system that offers highly effective waterproofing. If issues arise after installation, repairs are usually straightforward and easy to complete.
