Background
Prince William School’s Art, Design & Technology block required a complete roof refurbishment to resolve weathering issues, improve energy efficiency, and extend the roof’s lifespan. JR Roofing Contracts was appointed to deliver the works using the Garland system, ensuring a robust, long-lasting finish while the school remained fully operational.

Challenges
Occupied school environment: Works were undertaken during term time, requiring meticulous planning to ensure safety, minimal disruption, and compliance with safeguarding policies.
Safeguarding requirements: All operatives held valid DBS checks and were briefed on appropriate conduct in a live school environment.
Multiple roof types: The project involved both flat and metal roof areas, requiring tailored application methods for each.
Weather sensitivity: Summer heat and variable conditions demanded careful scheduling for optimal installation and adhesion.

Solution

  • Garland system installation: Applied a high-performance waterproofing membrane across the roof field, gutters, and details, ensuring continuous lap security.
  • Metal roof encapsulation: Encased existing metal roof areas within the Garland system for added durability and protection.
  • Detailing: Installed new vents, lead collars for pipe penetrations, GRP trims, ridge capping’s, and precise skirting flashings to ensure complete watertight integrity.
  • Safeguarding coordination: Maintained strict segregation of work areas, adhered to school safeguarding protocols, and ensured all staff conducted themselves with professionalism and respect for the school environment.
  • Quality assurance: Worked closely with Garland technical inspectors to maintain exceptional workmanship standards.

Results
The project was delivered to specification, signed off without defects, and received outstanding feedback from the client for the quality of the works, professional conduct, and minimal disruption to school operations. The new roofing system provides improved energy performance, extended service life, and reduced maintenance needs.
