Client: Abingdon & Witney College
Location: Witney Campus, Oxfordshire
Project Duration: 8 weeks
Scope of Works: Flat roof replacement with thermal upgrade, full pitched roof
replacement including new hand-cut roof and associated stonework
Value: £173,000.00

Background
Abingdon & Witney College required essential roofing works to improve the performance and longevity of its Witney Campus buildings. The project involved upgrading the flat roofs to meet modern thermal standards and replacing a pitched roof where significant timber decay was discovered. JR Roofing Contracts was appointed to carry out the works, ensuring minimal disruption to the college’s day-to-day activities.

Challenges
Unexpected structural issues: During works, significant timber rot was found in the pitched roof, necessitating a full hand-cut roof replacement.
Time sensitivity:
The new hand-cut roof was installed within seven days of discovery to prevent further deterioration and keep the project on track.

Solution

  • Flat roof:Installed Garland UK felt system with VCL, tapered insulation, and recovery board to achieve upgraded thermal performance.
  • Pitched roof:Constructed a bespoke hand-cut timber roof and carried out associated stonework to match the existing building style.
  • Materials:Installed composite slates to blend seamlessly with the campus’s existing architecture.
  • Safety & access:Erected a temporary roof scaffold to protect the interior during timber replacement, ensuring no water ingress and maintaining safe working conditions.

Results
Thermal efficiency of the flat roof improved significantly, reducing future heating costs. Heritage appearance maintained through careful material selection and stonework detailing. No disruption to college operations, with works carried out safely during term time.
